RWL German Imports was born in 1972 in Bob Lanes’s garage. Bob began working on
cars at night after
his full-time job in order to support his Porsche racing passion. Growing up in Pensacola, Florida, Bob
was exposed to European sports cars, the preferred choice of Navy pilots in training at the naval air
station located there. By the age of 23 Bob bought his first Porsche. He would later race a 1961 Porsche
Roadster and provide technical and mechanical support for numerous IMSA teams.
Inevitably after many years in the automotive business, one amasses one’s own collection. So, 2007 finds
Bob, never one without an ongoing project, in the process of restoring his 1956 Porsche Speedster and his
1972 Porsche Targa. He recently refurbished the engine on this 1992 911 Turbo and converted the stock fuel
and ignition systems to a fully programable electronic engine management system. Bob’s everyday driver
is a classic 1988 M5 BMW.
Bob decided in 1973 that the field of architecture, for which he obtained a degree from Auburn University,
was not going to be his life’s path. He wanted to race and he wanted that racecar to be a Porsche.
Immersing himself up to his ears in Porsche automobiles was, at the time, the only way he felt this was
going to happen... So began what has so far been a 35-year full-time endeavor into the world of precision cars.
The girls, Muffin and Junebug
Bob has successfully built a business that today services over 600 European cars annually. RWL has
maintained the same address in downtown Atlanta for the past 31 years. Bob has not only managed to
build a loyal client base but has also maintained his Office Manager, Nancy Zahn for over 20 years.
Brendan Digel, with over 15 years experience working on European cars, has for the last year been
Bob’s trusted and only technician. Brendan is also an accomplished racer, campaigning his
BMW 535 racecar. Brendan’s passions are his wife, BMW club racing, and the NASA GTS Challenge.
